Day Trip
The Ngorongoro Conservation Area is a protected region and a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Ngorongoro District, about 180 km (110 mi) west of Arusha City, within the Crater Highlands geological area of northern Tanzania. The area is most renowned for the Ngorongoro Crater, a massive volcanic caldera formed millions of years ago. Managed by the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority, which operates as a branch of the Tanzanian government, the conservation area covers the boundary of the Ngorongoro District in the Arusha Region.
The western edge of the area borders Serengeti National Park, and together with the Maasai Mara Game Reserve in Kenya, forms the region known for the Great Migration—one of the most spectacular wildlife events on the planet. Each year, millions of wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and other animals traverse the region in search of food and water.
In addition to its breathtaking landscapes and abundant wildlife, the conservation area is home to Olduvai Gorge, one of the world’s most important paleoanthropological sites, providing critical insights into the early evolution of humans.
