Your trek begins with a steady uphill hike through the lush rainforest, a region teeming with colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and exotic birdlife. As you make your way to Mandara Hut (2,700m), the cool, shaded trails provide a scenic and refreshing start to your climb.
Upon arrival at Mandara Camp, our team will welcome you with a warm meal, and you’ll settle into comfortable A-frame huts. In the evening, you have the optional opportunity to take a short acclimatization hike to Maundi Crater, where you can witness breathtaking panoramic views of Kilimanjaro’s peaks and the surrounding landscapes.
- Altitude: 1,830 m – 2,700 m
- Hiking Distance: 8 km
- Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
Day 2: Trek to Horombo Hut
Begin your day with a hearty breakfast at Mandara Hut before setting out on the next leg of your trek. The trail leads you through the last stretch of the lush rainforest, gradually transitioning into the moorland zone, where vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape more rugged.
As you ascend, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks, two of Kilimanjaro’s iconic summits. The 6-hour trek to Horombo Hut (3,720m) allows for a steady pace, giving your body time to acclimate to the increasing altitude.
Upon arrival at Horombo Hut, our team will welcome you with a warm meal, and you’ll have time to rest and adjust to the higher altitude. In the evening, your guide will provide a briefing on the next day’s trek, ensuring you are well-prepared for the challenges ahead.
- Altitude: 2,700 m – 3,720 m
- Hiking Distance: 12 km
- Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
To enhance acclimatization and improve your chances of reaching the summit, you’ll spend an extra day at Horombo Hut (3,720m), allowing your body more time to adjust to the altitude.
You have two options for the day:
- Rest at the camp and enjoy the serene high-altitude surroundings.
- Embark on a short acclimatization hike to Zebra Rocks (3,980m), a unique geological formation featuring black-and-white-striped lava rock. This hike helps your body adapt to the thinner air, reducing the risk of altitude sickness and preparing you for the upcoming higher elevations.
After returning to Horombo Hut, you’ll enjoy a hearty meal and have time to relax. In the evening, your guide will brief you on the next day’s ascent, ensuring you are well-prepared for the journey ahead.
- Altitude: 3,720 m (Horombo Hut)
- Optional Acclimatization Hike Altitude: 3,980 m (Zebra Rocks)
Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
Today’s trek takes you across the expansive lunar desert known as the Saddle, a stark yet breathtaking landscape stretching between Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. This barren, high-altitude terrain offers unobstructed views of Kilimanjaro’s towering peaks, creating a truly surreal experience.
The 6-hour trek is steady but challenging due to the increasing altitude. Upon arrival at Kibo Hut (4,700m), you’ll have an early dinner and rest, conserving energy for the summit attempt, which begins just before midnight.
In the evening, your guide will conduct a detailed briefing, preparing you mentally and physically for the most demanding section of your journey—the final ascent to Uhuru Peak.
- Altitude: 3,720 m – 4,700 m
- Hiking distance: 10 km
- Hiking time: 5-6 hours
Day 5: Summit Day - Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak & Descent to Horombo Hut
Around midnight, you’ll wake up for a light meal and hot tea before beginning your final push toward Uhuru Peak. This is the most challenging and demanding section of the trek, requiring mental resilience and physical endurance.
The climb to Gillman’s Point (5,685m) takes about six hours, navigating through steep switchbacks on loose scree. Your guide will provide support and encouragement to help you push through.
From Gillman’s Point, you’ll continue along the crater rim for another two hours to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa. If weather permits, you’ll witness an unforgettable sunrise over the vast landscapes below.
After celebrating your incredible achievement and taking photos at the summit, you’ll begin your descent back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and meal before continuing onward to Horombo Hut, where you’ll spend the night.
- Altitude: 4,700 m – 5,895 m – 3,720 m
- Hiking distance: 22 km
- Hiking time: 12-15 hours
Day 6: Final Descent - Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
After an energizing breakfast, you’ll begin your final descent, trekking through the moorland and lush rainforest as you make your way back to Marangu Gate. The 6-7 hour journey offers one last chance to take in the breathtaking scenery and reflect on your incredible accomplishment.
Upon arrival at Marangu Gate, you’ll sign out and receive your hard-earned summit certificate, a testament to your determination and achievement.
